Stellaris 4.4.5 'Pegasus' Early Open Beta Now Available on PC

Paradox Interactive has surprise-launched an early version of the Stellaris 4.4.5 'Pegasus' update, moving the release to the stellaris_test branch ahead of schedule. While the developers initially planned for a next-week rollout, community feedback prompted an expedited release, allowing players to test the changes over the weekend.

As this is an early iteration, the team warns that the update has undergone minimal QA review. The patch introduces significant adjustments to game balance, most notably concerning Operational Reserves and new galaxy-wide customization options.

New Galaxy Settings and Mechanics

The most immediate change for players is the addition of a Resource Abundance slider in the galaxy settings. This new tool allows for fine-tuning resource distribution, ranging from "Scarce" to x5. The x1 setting mirrors the abundance levels of version 4.3, while x2 serves as the new default setting for the game.

Nomadic empires also receive new tools, including Waystation Voidlure modules and an Arkship Voidlure Array. The latter allows players to right-click a system to lure space fauna, which now disable rather than destroy waystations while present.

Operational Reserves Balance Overhaul

The 4.4.5 update significantly reworks Operational Reserves to improve consistency. Key changes include:

  • Tracking: Reserves now track Energy and Minerals at a 1:1 ratio, down from the previous 3:1.
  • Capacity Scaling: Maximum reserves now scale based on the number and tier of owned Arkships, rather than a fixed cap.
  • Critical Thresholds: A "Critical" stage has been added to the reserves track, imposing severe penalties on research, Unity, and Alloys.
  • Pop Impacts: The Critical stage now affects population efficiency, causing Lithoid pops to lose happiness and growth, while Machine and Mechanical pops suffer from reduced Job Efficiency.

Quality of Life and Bug Fixes

The patch addresses a wide variety of technical issues and quality-of-life improvements. Notably, the update fixes a bug where Tombworld Earth was spawning too frequently, often replacing the United Nations of Earth when playing as other factions. Additionally, the developers have implemented a fix for the "CFL" tournament, preventing fleets from getting stuck in a non-repairable state if the event runs for more than three years.

Other notable fixes include:

  • Fleet Management: Upgrading fleets will now correctly reissue orders if a mobile starbase jumps away.
  • Species Rights: The game now forces a recalculation of species rights upon loading a save file.
  • Automation: Logistic Ship automation now defaults to "on" for Harvest Resources and "off" for Waystation collection.
  • Performance: The daily stutter caused by science ship automation when no valid targets were available has been resolved.

The team plans to push further updates to the stellaris_test branch throughout next week, with the final release of version 4.4.5 currently targeted for two weeks from now.
