Stellaris Update 5505 Brings Major Changes to Nomadic Empires

Paradox Interactive has released the latest update for Stellaris, bringing a wide array of balance tweaks and quality-of-life improvements primarily focused on the Nomadic empires introduced in recent content. The patch, identified as 5505, addresses long-standing player feedback regarding Arkship management, AI decision-making, and resource handling.
Refining the Nomadic Experience
One of the most significant changes in this update involves Arkship habitability and efficiency. Arkships now possess an inherent 40% habitability, matching standard habitats. To further support growth, the Arkship Living Space Module now provides an additional +5% habitability in exchange for an Exotic Gas upkeep cost. Additionally, planet class modifiers will now correctly apply to Arkship colonies, providing more consistency across different playstyles.
For players managing the "Forever Cruise" situation, the update makes several adjustments to reduce the risk of starting in a massive economic deficit. The number of Specialist Crew jobs has been reduced, and the consumer goods upkeep for passengers has been lowered, though abandoning contracts will now result in a passenger satisfaction penalty.
Quality-of-Life and AI Improvements
The update introduces several patch 5505 adjustments aimed at making fleet and ship automation more predictable:
- Logistics Hubs: A new indicator has been added to the galaxy map, making it easier to track your supply network at a glance.
- Smart Harvesting: Arkship and Logistic harvest orders now prioritize high-value planets within a system rather than simply targeting the nearest one.
- Automation Logic: Science ships that temporarily run out of reachable tasks will now remain in their automated state, resuming work as soon as new tasks become available.
- FTL Behavior: Following ships will now begin charging their FTL drives without waiting for the lead ship to complete its hyperlane jump, reducing travel downtime.
AI behavior has also been refined. Nomadic AI empires are now less likely to dominate advanced AI empire slots during galaxy generation, and AI countries will now consider abandoning contracts after 20 years have passed. Furthermore, AI empires will no longer accept unreachable contracts and will proactively abandon them if they become unreachable.
Technical Fixes and Resource Balancing
Resource management has seen a major overhaul for nomads. Researching mining technologies for strategic resources—such as Volatile Motes or Exotic Gases—now grants a 50% harvesting yield bonus, replacing the previous penalties for lacking specific tech. Additionally, "Tribute Vault" and "Pirate Hideout" waystation modules now correctly add resources directly to the waystation stockpile.
The update also addresses a variety of bugs, including a fix for the "Stellar Ignition Contract" which was previously impossible to complete, and a resolution for the issue where Arkship afterburners failed to upgrade to tier 2.
