Xbox Unionized Workers Speak Out Against Impending Layoffs
Members of various Microsoft Xbox unions held a press conference today to push back against reports of imminent mass layoffs. With the company’s fiscal year ending tomorrow, June 30, employees are speaking out against the prospect of staff cuts, declaring that they “will not be treated as disposable.”
Frank Arce, vice president for CWA District 9, opened the conference by condemning both past and potential job losses. Union representatives argued that the cuts are a choice rather than a necessity. Pointing to recent console price hikes, Arce stated, “The money is there, leadership is simply choosing where it goes and who pays.”
Other speakers highlighted the company’s financial priorities. Sherveen Uduwana of the United Video Game Workers noted the $96.5 million in total compensation received by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella last year. Meanwhile, Diablo 4 senior environment artist Mahreen Fatima questioned the necessity of the layoffs in light of the billions of dollars Microsoft has recently funneled into artificial intelligence programs.
The Fight for Contractual Protections
Since Microsoft entered into a labor neutrality agreement in 2022, several unions have formed across its various game studios. However, the bargaining process has been inconsistent. While the World of Warcraft union team reported positive movement from management regarding layoff protections, other groups are facing significant delays.
Representatives for ZeniMax stated that Microsoft has left their proposals for layoff protections unanswered for months. Similarly, an Activision Publishing union member noted that their group is still waiting on responses for 20 outstanding proposals. Union members are now looking to standardize protections across all units, including those not yet covered by signed contracts.
“We’re done paying for executives’ failures,” said Andrew Snell, a QA tester at Activision Publishing. Snell confirmed that the various Xbox unions are joining forces to coordinate their efforts against potential staff reductions.
Restructuring Amid Leadership Changes
The calls for protection come alongside reports that Microsoft is preparing for a major restructuring of its gaming division. While no official confirmation has been provided, the company is expected to undergo significant personnel cuts in the coming days. Reports have suggested that the company is considering shuttering studios such as Compulsion Games, Double Fine, and Ninja Theory, though these studios are reportedly in negotiations regarding possible exit strategies.
This period of uncertainty follows the recent resignation of Craig Duncan, the former head of Xbox Game Studios. As the end of the fiscal year approaches, union members remain focused on securing formal guarantees—including advanced notice and hiring freezes—to prevent further job losses across the organization.
