Apex Legends 29.1 Update: Axle Nerfs, Ballistic Buffs, and Shotgun Changes

The Overclocked season of Apex Legends is hitting its mid-split turning point. With patch 29.1, the developers are addressing meta imbalances, specifically targeting high-performing Legends like Axle and Conduit while attempting to revitalize underutilized picks like Ballistic, Pathfinder, and Seer. The full patch notes are slated for release on June 22nd, 2026, but the Game Updates team has provided a detailed look at what to expect.

Tuning Axle and Addressing Community Frustrations

Axle’s launch has been a focal point for the balance team. While the developers intentionally release new Legends in a strong state to drive engagement, they acknowledge that Axle's current Nitro Gate mobility and the predictable nature of her 'Kickstart' ultimate have caused frustration. To address this, they are replacing her Level 2 upgrade, 'Super Slider,' with a version that limits the maximum active Nitro Gates to three, preventing the battlefield clutter reported by players.

Furthermore, the 'Kickstart' ultimate is receiving a physics adjustment. Instead of launching enemies straight up, the ability will now toss victims in an arc that inherits their current velocity. This change is designed to give players more agency during the encounter, turning what was once a guaranteed death sentence into a more manageable combat situation.

Revitalizing Ballistic, Pathfinder, and Seer

In an effort to pull pick rates off the floor, several veteran Legends are seeing significant shifts. Ballistic is getting a major quality-of-life change to his tactical: the overheat effect will now only apply to the active weapon, allowing players to swap and continue fighting. His ultimate is also being adjusted to grant a sprint boost rather than a general speed buff, aiming to preserve team utility without making squads impossible to track during combat.

Pathfinder is receiving a more mobility-focused pass. He will now have two tactical charges with a flat 20-second cooldown and a faster zipline delivery speed. Additionally, he gains a new 'Landing Gear' upgrade for improved air control and soft landings. Seer, meanwhile, is getting faster heartbeat sensor activation and a tactical that provides a more significant slow on impact to catch high-mobility targets like Octane and Axle. His ultimate will now trigger a quick initial scan to reveal enemies upon deployment.

Shotgun Meta and Regional Discrepancies

The developer team is attempting to solve the "finisher" shotgun problem—where players secure a knock with a Mastiff or Peacekeeper only to be immediately downed themselves. The solution is a new hop-up called Executioner. When equipped, this hop-up triggers shield regeneration upon securing a knock, providing players the survivability needed to survive the post-kill window. Executioner will replace Disruptor Rounds and Dual Shell.

Interestingly, the patch notes highlight that weapon meta data varies by region. The Alternator, for instance, has seen significant popularity in Japan, which influenced the team's decision to keep it stable despite lower usage rates in the West. This regional insight is something the weapon meta team intends to monitor more closely moving forward.

Support and Skirmisher Adjustments

Conduit, who dominated the meta in the first half of the season, is receiving a series of targeted nerfs. Her tactical now has a longer cooldown to reward more deliberate use, and her 'Enduring Barrier' upgrade will no longer regenerate shields while a player is taking ring damage. Valkyrie is also seeing a minor nerf; the team is removing her skydive landing speed improvements to ensure consistency across the Legend roster, aiming to curb the frustration of being quickly dropped upon by aerial squads.
