Naoki Hamaguchi Clarifies Why 'Revelation' Is the Final Fantasy VII Subtitle

Since the conclusion of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, fans have been speculating about the title for the third installment. While many guessed the name might follow the "Re-" pattern established by Remake and Rebirth, the official reveal at Summer Geoff Fest 2026 confirmed the title as Final Fantasy VII: Revelation.
Game director Naoki Hamaguchi recently spoke to Game Informer about the title, noting that the development team kept the name under tight wraps—so much so that only about five or six people on the massive development team knew the title before the official presentation.
The Meaning Behind 'Revelation'
Despite the biblical connotations often associated with the word, Hamaguchi clarified that the title is not a religious reference. Instead, it speaks to the narrative conclusion of the trilogy. "This is our message, to say that this is the end of everything, this is where everything gets revealed, and this is where you will find out all the answers," Hamaguchi said, noting that the game aims to provide closure to the unanswered questions lingering from the previous two entries.
There was some confusion regarding why the subtitle didn't match the game's primary theme. Hamaguchi confirmed that the central theme of the project is "Resolve." He explained that this theme encompasses the party's internal state—their thoughts, feelings, and the determination they hold heading into the final battles of the series.
When asked why the team didn't simply title the game Final Fantasy VII: Resolve, Hamaguchi offered a straightforward explanation: "The central theme being 'Resolve,' and it being a word that starts with R-E, that's just a coincidence. It wasn't really a candidate for our title. We landed with 'Revelation,' because that was the word that was the best match for what we wanted to depict in the third installment of our series."
Player Choice and Narrative
Hamaguchi also touched upon how player experience might differ throughout the game. He noted that because parts of the story can be changed based on player actions, individual experiences may vary. However, he emphasized that regardless of these choices, there is only one ending.
With the title now public and the team's vision for the conclusion set, players can look forward to the series finale when Final Fantasy VII: Revelation releases in spring 2027.
