Naoki Hamaguchi, the director behind the Final Fantasy VII remake series, is currently deep in development on the recently revealed Final Fantasy VII: Revelation. However, looking past the conclusion of that trilogy, the director has shared that his professional focus remains firmly rooted in the genre that made him famous.

In a recent conversation with Game Informer, Hamaguchi confirmed that he expects his next creative work to be another RPG. When discussing the potential scope of his future projects, he pointed to Square Enix’s track record, stating that the company is “more than capable of delivering this grand-scale RPG that could resonate to gamers across the world.”

A Future Beyond Final Fantasy?

While Hamaguchi is currently at the helm of one of the industry's most high-profile series, he isn't closing the door on the possibility of stepping away from the Final Fantasy brand for his next endeavor. He acknowledged that while fans have specific expectations, he is personally intrigued by the idea of a change.

“Personally, if it’s not Final Fantasy, that’s also exciting, because that could be a challenge for me. So, whatever it is, I hope fans look forward to it,” Hamaguchi said.

The director emphasized that his primary goal is to take on the challenge of creating another compelling RPG. Whether that manifests as another entry in the Final Fantasy lineage or an entirely new intellectual property remains to be seen, as Hamaguchi noted that the specifics of the project are not yet set in stone.
