Overwatch Season 3: Shion Brings Yakuza-Style Swagger and Motorcycles

When Overwatch Season 3: Into the Tiger’s Den launches tomorrow, June 16, players will get their hands on the game's latest hero: Shion. An Omnic with a human appearance, Shion brings a blend of Yakuza-style attitude and high-octane mobility to the roster, wielding dual burst-fire pistols and a motorcycle that she can launch at enemies for explosive damage.
According to lead hero producer Kenny Hudson, the development team looked to iconic action cinema and animation to shape Shion’s identity. The design process was heavily influenced by the John Wick films, with additional aesthetic cues taken from Lucy Liu’s character in Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and the legendary cyberpunk anime Akira. The goal was to create a character who “thrives in excess,” ultimately leading to her distinctively fluid combat style.
A Stylish Combat Kit
Shion’s gameplay is defined by her mobility and her “Kira Pistols.” Perhaps her most striking feature is a reload animation where she flicks new magazines into the air and slams her pistols together to reload both simultaneously. Lead narrative designer Miranda Moyer and the animation team worked closely to ensure these movements reflected Shion’s personality.
Her kit includes several tools for survival and engagement:
- Evade: A utility that buffs her 250 HP to 325 with overhealth that degrades rapidly.
- Refuel: A Major Perk that provides healing while she is on her motorcycle.
- Execution: Her secondary fire mode, which fires in an X-pattern for burst damage up close or a rapid-fire, accurate pattern for longer distances.
- Faces of Death: A Major Perk granting her all four Damage Subrole passives.
“We wanted players to build their own dynamic combos,” Hudson said, noting that Shion is designed to thrive in dive and brawl compositions. She pairs particularly well with tanks like Ramattra or Junker Queen, and can be bolstered by supports like Brigitte and Lúcio. Blizzard also noted that creative plays, such as using Lifeweaver to pull Shion back after she engages with her bike, are already being tested.
Balancing the Glass Cannon
While some players have expressed concerns regarding the strength of her Major Perks, Hudson remains confident in the team's ability to monitor the hero post-launch. “Alec [Dawson, associate game director] always says ‘safe side of strong’ is the motto,” Hudson explained. The team intends to use live data to adjust her performance quickly if she proves too dominant once players have mastered her movement.
Despite her high mobility and health-gaining perks, Shion is intended to be a “glass cannon.” She is vulnerable to crowd control abilities, such as Sombra’s hacking or Ana’s sleep dart, and can be easily punished if caught out of position. Whether the community's fears about her balance prove accurate will be tested when Shion joins the Overwatch lineup tomorrow.
