Scream Operator: Haunted House Manager Brings Industrial Terror to PC

If you have ever wanted to trade the traditional tycoon experience for the high-pressure environment of a control booth, Scream Operator: Haunted House Manager might be the next addition to your library. Independent studio Japhet Interactive has announced the pixel-art management sim, which puts players in charge of the complex, often chaotic, inner workings of an industrial haunted attraction.

⚡ Quick Facts
  • Developer: Japhet Interactive
  • Platforms: Linux, Mac, Windows
  • Release Window: Q1 2027
  • Public Demo: October 2026

Managing the Mechanics of Fear

Rather than simply laying out paths and watching the credits roll, Scream Operator focuses on the moment-to-moment operational strain of running a dark ride. Players are tasked with manually dispatching ride vehicles, triggering pre-show sequences, and managing a constant flow of empty carts back to the depot. The game forces you to juggle multiple systems simultaneously: power grids, safety protocols, queue management, and the actual scares themselves.

"With Scream Operator, I wanted to capture the tactical stress and nostalgia of running a classic dark ride," says Niels van der Ven, founder of Japhet Interactive. He describes the gameplay loop as a "balancing act between operational efficiency and psychological terror."

Strategy Beyond the Scare

The progression system centers on your ability to optimize your house. You build scare rooms using a variety of animatronics, props, and decor, all of which contribute to your total Scare Score. However, these attractions come with operational risks. Heavy animatronics pull significant power, and if you push your station too hard, you risk critical system failures and costly safety fines.

To keep the operation afloat, you will also need to manage secondary revenue streams, including merchandise and vending shops, while upgrading queue lines to minimize guest wait times. It is a system built on tradeoffs; you need to keep the ride frightening to attract guests, but keep it stable enough to avoid a total operational collapse.

Platform Support and Expectations

For players on Linux, the announcement comes with the added benefit of native support confirmed for the Steam release. While Japhet Interactive has not provided specific system requirements or performance benchmarks, the focus on a control-panel-driven UI suggests a design that values input clarity.

Those hoping to play on the Steam Deck should maintain a measured outlook for now; the studio has not confirmed Deck verification, and there is no word on controller optimization or specific performance targets for handheld play. With the public demo set to arrive in October 2026, players will soon have their first opportunity to test how the game’s management systems handle the pressure.
