Xbox Denies Plans to Bring Gears of War: E-Day to PS5

In the wake of widespread speculation regarding the future of its console strategy, Xbox has officially broken its silence. Chief strategy officer Matthew Ball has pushed back against rumors suggesting the company plans to abandon its exclusive titles, explicitly confirming that upcoming major releases will not be ported to rival platforms like the PlayStation 5.

Addressing the growing uncertainty, Ball stated, "These rumours are false. Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution will stay exclusive. There are no conversations and have been no conversations to 'reverse course.'" He reiterated the company's commitment to delivering signature exclusives on an annual basis.

⚡ Quick Facts
  • Gears of War: E-Day Release: October 6, 2026
  • Confirmed Platforms: Xbox Series S/X and PC
  • Official Stance: Xbox denies plans to port E-Day or Clockwork Revolution to PS5
  • Current Context: Internal reports suggest potential layoffs at studios including Compulsion, Double Fine, and Ninja Theory

A Climate of Uncertainty

The denial from Microsoft leadership arrives during a turbulent period for the Xbox division. The gaming industry is currently bracing for a new round of layoffs, with reports suggesting that studios such as Compulsion, Double Fine, and Ninja Theory are at risk of closure unless they can secure new ownership or transition to independent operations.

The announcement of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II at the recent Xbox Games Showcase has only fueled further confusion. With reports now emerging that developer Ninja Theory may face closure just nine days after the showcase, observers are questioning why Microsoft would feature the title so prominently if the studio's future was already in jeopardy.

The Multiplatform Dilemma

Despite the official denial, trust remains a significant hurdle for the company. Microsoft previously stated that any Xbox game could potentially reach other platforms, a position that saw Starfield eventually arrive on the PlayStation 5. With Halo campaign sales on PlayStation showing notable performance, there is ongoing debate regarding whether Microsoft is leaving revenue on the table by restricting its biggest titles to its own hardware.

For now, however, Microsoft is holding the line. While only two titles are currently confirmed as console exclusives with more expected next year, the company insists that its core strategy remains unchanged for the immediate future.
