Don't Nod Faces Possible Closure as Tencent Withholds Further Funding

Don't Nod, the Paris-based studio best known for the Life is Strange series, is facing a critical financial crisis. According to a report by French games outlet Gamekult, auditors have warned that the company could be out of cash entirely by November 2026.
The situation follows a string of recent releases that failed to hit sales targets, including Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden and the critically well-received Lost Records: Bloom & Rage. These commercial struggles have left the studio in a precarious position, compounded by the fact that its parent company, Tencent, is no longer willing to provide the financial backing required to keep operations running.

The Search for New Backers
As noted by journalist Gauthier 'Gautoz' Andres, who analyzed the studio's latest financial disclosures, the leadership team at Don't Nod is attempting to secure a new publisher to support their upcoming projects. This task is proving difficult in a climate where many publishers have become increasingly reluctant to take risks on new titles.
The impact of this funding withdrawal is already being felt internally. According to Andres, a project that was in development at the studio has already been scrapped following the loss of investment. This comes on the heels of layoffs at the studio last year, a trend that has affected many corners of the industry, including Xbox, which has reduced funding for several studios in recent months.
A Challenging Industry Climate
Don't Nod is not alone in its struggle to secure necessary support. The current gaming industry landscape has seen several high-profile funding pullbacks. Earlier this year, NetEase withdrew its support for Gang of Dragon—a project from the creator of the Yakuza series—just months after its announcement, which reportedly led to the closure of that studio.
For Don't Nod, the path forward is narrow. With Tencent refusing to raise capital or finance future work, the studio's survival now hinges entirely on finding a third-party publisher willing to back their next game. Whether they can navigate this fiscal shortfall before their treasury is empty remains the central question for the developer as it approaches the end of the year.
